Artist Statement
I was born during the eye of a hurricane. A circular area of momentary calm isolated from chaos. Category storms, not birthdays, mark life’s hallmark moments. Three, four, five; counting up their strength makes them more memorable. The height of the flood, not growing pains, in pencil marks on my wall. Hurricanes are not metaphors in my world; they shock reality into existence. They lead my work as they do my life. In my practice, my paintings capture the eye- the fundamental universality that I crave most—the sensation of existing placid inside a shell as existence cyclones uncontrolled outside.
I find inspiration from my homes ruled by tides, Florida, where I grew up and attended the University of Miami, and Venice, Italy, where I now spend most of my time. My experience in Ecological Architecture influences my work as I dissect the paradox of grief and worship I have witnessed in communities amid the aftermath of environmental disasters, specifically hurricanes and those involving water. My paintings are expressive in their restraint. My process involves layering paint and tape, amounting to sensations of being atmospherically engulfed. I work intuitively, meditating on stages of grief and inviting storm-like release through dreams of destined harm.
